Austin has been with Brandenburg Plumbing for almost 7 years now, and we are proud to have him on the team. We asked him a few questions

What inspired you to become a plumber?
"I needed a good job," he said with a chuckle. With three kids, including twins, making sure he could provide for his family was a big motivator. But over time, plumbing has become more than just a paycheck. It’s turned into a way to build a career and help the community.

How long have you been a plumber? How did it all start?
"Six years. I wanted to make a career for myself and do something that mattered." It wasn’t just about finding work—it was about building something lasting.

What’s your favorite part of the job?
"No two days are the same," he said. "I love the challenge of figuring things out and getting to travel to different places." Whether it’s solving a tricky problem or meeting homeowners, every day brings something new.

Tough Jobs and Lessons Learned

What’s the most challenging or unusual job you’ve ever worked on?
"Slab leaks—always slab leaks," he said with a sigh. If you know, you know. These hidden issues are notorious for being tough to pinpoint and even tougher to fix.

What’s one skill you’ve really improved at?
"Problem solving, hands down. When I started, I couldn’t even drill a screw into a board without dropping everything." Now? He’s the guy you want solving your plumbing puzzles.

Any advice for homeowners trying to keep their plumbing in good shape?
He had a few gems:

  • Keep those shut-off valves working: "Twice a year, go around and turn them off and back on. Otherwise, they can get stuck when you really need them."
  • Avoid toothpaste clogs: "When you’re brushing your teeth, let the water run until it gets hot. That way, toothpaste doesn’t build up in the pipes."
  • Don’t forget your water heater: "Flush it once a year so it doesn’t sit there collecting gunk."

Little habits like these can save you from a big headache down the line.

How has plumbing changed since you started?
"Seals are so much easier to use now," he said. "They’ve really streamlined a lot of the work. But as more people take computer jobs, plumbers are going to be even more important. Someone’s got to fix the pipes!"

What do you like to do when you’re not working?
"I’m an outdoors guy—I love hiking and doing outdoorsy things. We just got four chickens and two ducks, so we’ve been busy building their coop. Right now, it’s Christmastime, so we’re putting up decorations."

He also shared a recent family outing: "We went to the Renaissance Festival. It was a blast! I dressed vaguely pirate, but it worked," he said with a grin.

What were you into in high school?
"I was in band all the way through and played trombone. Senior year, we played Disney music, and that was a lot of fun. I also did track and tennis."

If you could tell your younger self one thing about being a plumber, what would it be?
"Start sooner. Seriously, start right out of high school. It’s life-changing, and the earlier you get that experience, the better."

What’s the best part about working with the Brandenburg Plumbing team?
"The atmosphere, for sure. They really take care of us. When things get crazy, they make sure we’re not working too late. Everyone looks out for each other, and that makes all the difference."
